Building Confidence in Mixed Media

When Your Art Feels Intimidating

Let me ask you something.

Have you ever sat down at your art table feeling excited… only to freeze the moment you faced a blank page?

You want to create something beautiful. Something expressive. Something you. But suddenly every decision feels huge.

What color should I start with?
What if I ruin it?
What if it turns out terrible?

Creative confidence doesn’t disappear because you lack talent. It disappears because you’re trying to get the first step right.

And that’s where mixed media layering becomes such a powerful teacher.

The Secret Mixed Media Artists Know

Here’s something that might surprise you.

Mixed media artists don’t sit down expecting the first mark to be perfect. In fact, most of the time the first layer looks… pretty terrible. Messy colors, random marks, scraps of paper that don’t seem to belong anywhere. If someone walked into the studio at that moment, they might wonder what on earth was happening.

But that’s actually part of the process, it’s called the “Ugly Stage”.

Mixed media artists understand something incredibly freeing: the first layer isn’t the art-it’s the beginning.

Instead of trying to make the page look finished right away, we focus on building a foundation. A little paint. A few torn collage scraps. Maybe some scribbles or stamped textures. None of it has to make sense yet. The goal is simply to create.

Once that first layer exists, the pressure starts to disappear.

Now you’re not staring at a blank page anymore. You’re responding to what’s already there. Maybe a color needs softening. Maybe a shape wants to be repeated somewhere else. Maybe a bold mark suddenly inspires a completely new direction. This is where the magic of layering begins.

Every layer becomes a response to the one before it. Each decision leads to another possibility. Instead of trying to force the art to be perfect, you start allowing the piece to evolve naturally. And that shift—from control to exploration—is where creative confidence really begins to grow.

Because once you realize you can always add another layer, the fear of making a mistake starts to lose its power.

Nothing is ruined.

It’s simply the next step in the story.

Why Layers Build Creative Confidence

Layers do something magical for artists who struggle with self-doubt. They remind you that art is a process, not a performance.

Every new layer gives you another opportunity to adjust, soften, emphasize, or transform what’s happening on the page.

A color that feels too bold? Glaze over it.

A section that feels flat? Add texture.

Something you don’t love? Collage right over it.

When you start thinking this way, something shifts. Instead of worrying about ruining your art, you begin to trust that you can work with whatever happens. And that’s where confidence lives.

A Simple Way to Start a Layered Page

If you're feeling stuck, try this simple approach the next time you sit down to create.

Step 1 — Make a messy beginning
Start with loose paint, scribbles, or writing. The goal isn’t beauty—it’s movement.

Step 2 — Add collage or texture
Torn paper, book pages, tissue paper, or fabric add instant interest and depth.

Step 3 — Respond with color
Use transparent paint layers to unify the background and soften harsh areas.

Step 4 — Bring in marks and details
Paint pens, stamps, charcoal, or pencil lines help bring personality to the page.

Step 5 — Step back and listen
Turn your page. Look from a distance. Ask yourself what the piece needs next. Not what it should be. What it needs.

Layering Moments

Some of my favorite pages have started out as complete messes.

Paint colors I didn’t love. Collage scraps that didn’t belong together. Marks that looked completely out of place.

In fact, I can think of one page in particular where I almost gave up right off the bat. The background felt too busy, the colors were fighting each other, and I remember sitting there thinking, Well… this one might just be a lost cause.

But instead of tossing it aside, I did what mixed media has taught me to do over and over again.

I added another layer.

I brushed some white paint over the background to soften everything. I tore a few pieces of tissue paper and pressed them into the page to create some texture. Then I added a loose charcoal scribble that somehow pulled the whole thing together.

Suddenly, the page started to breathe again. That chaotic mess I almost abandoned became another wonderful spread in my art journal.

And moments like that remind me why layering is so powerful.

The early stages of a piece rarely make sense. They’re not supposed to. They’re just the beginning of the conversation. As you keep responding—adding, softening, adjusting, and experimenting—the piece slowly finds its voice. And when it finally comes together, it feels less like you forced it… and more like you discovered it.

The Truth About Brave Creativity

Creative confidence isn’t something you magically wake up with one morning.

Most of the artists you admire—the ones who seem fearless with their color choices and bold with their marks—didn’t start that way. They started exactly where you might be right now: staring at a page, wondering if they were about to ruin it.

Confidence grows slowly. Quietly. In small, brave moments at the art table.

It grows the first time you add paint to a page even though you're unsure.
It grows when you cover something that isn’t working instead of giving up.
It grows when you decide to keep going—even when the piece feels awkward halfway through.

Every layer you add is a tiny act of trust.

Trust that you’ll figure it out.
Trust that the next mark might help things come together.
Trust that the process itself is worth showing up for.

And here’s the part I really want you to hear:

Brave creativity isn’t about making perfect art.
It’s about giving yourself permission to explore without shutting yourself down.

Some days the piece will come together beautifully. Other days it won’t. But every time you sit down and create anyway, you’re strengthening that inner voice that says, “I’m allowed to do this.”

Layer by layer, that voice gets louder. And before you know it, you’re not just making art anymore.

You’re creating with courage.
