Preparing a Mixed Media Collection for Exhibit
This one feels big.
My gallery exhibit is officially open, and I still have to pause sometimes and remind myself that it’s real. The hours. The layers. The bravery. They’re all hanging on walls now.
So today I want to take you behind the scenes.
Not just the polished, framed artwork but the messy tables, the half-finished canvases, the moments where I questioned myself.
Because preparing a mixed media collection for a gallery is more than just making art.
It’s becoming brave enough to show it.
It Always Starts With a Question
Every collection begins the same way for me, not with a paint color, not with a sketch, but with a question.
For Journey to Self, the question was:
What layers do women carry that the world doesn’t always see?
For Windows to the Soul, it was:
What happens when we let ourselves be fully seen, light and dark?
Before I ever pick up a brush, I sit with that question. I journal. I gather scraps. I pull words. I let the idea simmer until it feels alive.
Because gallery work isn’t random.
It’s intentional storytelling in layers.
From Blank Canvas to Layered Portrait
When I start a portrait, it rarely looks like what it becomes.
First, I build the foundation layers: torn elements, words
These represent emotions, thoughts, depth inside us.
Then comes the paint, transparent washes, texture, drips, splatters. Marks that feel risky.
Sometimes I cover something beautiful.
Sometimes I ruin something.
Sometimes I have to walk away and come back the next day.
But the truth is:
The magic doesn’t happen in the first layer.
It happens in responding.
Gallery work requires patience, courage and heart.
You don’t rush layered portraits. You listen to them.

The Emotional Side No One Sees
Preparing a full collection for a gallery is vulnerable and scary.
It’s one thing to post a piece on Instagram or Facebook but it’s another thing entirely to commit to 24 pieces that will hang side by side, telling a cohesive story.
There were moments when I wondered:
Is this strong enough?
Is this too bold?
How will others respond?
And then I reminded myself:
My job isn’t to make safe art.
My job is to make honest art.
That shift changes everything.

The Final Step: Seeing It on the Wall
There’s something surreal about seeing your layered portraits hung in a gallery space.
The texture becomes more visible. The drips feel intentional. The eyes follow you across the room.
What once lived on my studio floor now lives under gallery lights.
And the best part?
Watching women stand in front of the work and quietly connect with it.
That’s when I know the layers did their job.
What This Means for You
You might not be preparing for a gallery exhibit right now.
But you are layering something.
Your journal pages, your canvases, your voice, your creative courage.
And if you’ve ever felt like your art “isn’t ready” to be seen…
Let me gently say this:
Bravery isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up anyway.
