They invite you to experiment, explore, and get messy—without the pressure of getting it “right” on the first try. In mixed media, each layer is a new opportunity to express yourself boldly and watch your page evolve in unexpected ways.

Why layers matter

When I first started creating mixed media, I often worried about making “bad” art. I would hold myself back and worry over the right steps and techniques. The result? Stiff, lifeless pages that felt more like homework than self-expression.

Then I discovered layering.

Those first messy marks were magical— splotches of color that didn’t make sense, collage scraps that felt out of place. It was perfect chaos and total freedom.

I stopped overthinking. I began to play. I trusted my intuition instead of my inner critic.

With each new layer, the fear of “ruining it” melted away. If I didn’t like something? I could paint over it. Add a new texture. Cover it with collage. Each layer became a new possibility rather than a final verdict.

Layers taught me that nothing is truly final — and that freedom builds unstoppable confidence. It felt like stepping into a brave new world, where every mark was an invitation to explore rather than a test to pass.

Three ways to build confidence through layering

Start messy on purpose

Challenge yourself to make those first marks bold, chaotic, and completely unplanned. Use big, sweeping strokes, splash paint with your hands, drip ink, or scribble wildly. This isn’t about creating something pretty right away — it’s about building a playground for your curiosity.

When you start messy on purpose, you immediately silence that inner perfectionist. You give yourself permission to play, and suddenly the page feels less intimidating and more like a wide-open invitation.

Make unexpected choices

Try using colors you don’t normally use. Add scraps of paper from old magazines, vintage books, or random packaging. Stencil with unexpected items — bubble wrap, a fork, an old lace doily.

These surprising elements add magic and energy to your work. They encourage you to loosen your grip on “shoulds” and explore the “what ifs.” And often, those unexpected choices lead to the most exciting, joyful results.

Pause and reflect, then keep going

After a few layers, step back. Turn your piece upside down or sideways. Squint your eyes. What shapes or patterns jump out? What colors feel alive?

This pause isn’t about judging — it’s about listening. Let your artwork tell you what it needs next. Maybe it wants more contrast. Maybe a new shape wants to emerge. Keep adding, responding, and experimenting until it feels vibrant and alive.
